Il Lucca Center of Contemporary Art propone come secondo evento espositivo una mostra monografica sul creatore della fotografia surrealista: Man Ray. Verranno presentate al pubblico i cinquanta ritratti che l'artista scattò alla moglie, Juliet Browner, tra il 1941 e il 1955. L'esposizione Man Ray. The Fifty Faces of Juliet sarà un appuntamento di straordinaria importanza perché darà l'opportunità di vedere per intero tutto il ciclo dedicato alla musa dell'artista. Si tratta di immagini in bianco e nero, spesso ritoccate a mano con pastelli colorati o stampate con particolari tecniche fotografiche, dove Juliet Browner, conosciuta da Man Ray a Hollywood nel 1940 e sposata sei anni dopo, si presta alle sperimentazioni artistiche del marito dando vita a immagini di estrema eleganza e sensualità.
Cinquanta lavori che permetteranno di comprendere meglio il variegato, e ancora in parte misterioso, mondo della fotografia e di approfondirlo in parallelo con le tecniche pittoriche che Man Ray conosceva ed apprezzava. Per buona parte della sua vita, lui si è infatti considerato un pittore e dobbiamo ringraziare le sue ristrettezze economiche se si è cimentato nello studio della fotografia.
La splendida serie è l'esempio di come Man Ray lavorò indagando tutte le proprietà tecniche del linguaggio fotografico, a partire dalla luce che, contrastata, può farci percepire un volto o un corpo come un insieme di forme astratte bianche, grigie e nere fino ad arrivare agli effetti applicati in fase di sviluppo e stampa, in cui Man Ray è maestro. La fotografia fu per l'artista un mezzo ideale per rappresentare le forme che aveva in mente, adatta a catturare e conservare i propri desideri. Il pittore considerò tale tecnica come un semplice strumento al servizio dell'intelletto. Ecco perché si allontanò subito dalla pratica ortodossa per abbracciare nuove modalità espressive.
Molte delle tecniche inventate da Man Ray, come la solarizzazione, il sovrasviluppo, la retinatura e le grane ottenute in fase di scatto o di stampa, furono applicate nella serie con Juliet. Restando lo studio delle tecniche pittoriche la sua grande passione, le applicò in buona parte di questi lavori rendendoli unici. I cinquanta scatti saranno accompagnati da disegni del Maestro che ritraggono sempre Juliet, da materiale biografico, da documenti storici, come la macchina fotografica con cui lavorava, e da altre foto che testimonieranno le varie tecniche ideate da Man Ray, come rayograph e cliché-verre.
Man Ray was one of the most unpredictable, genial, brilliant, anti-conventional, contradictory, impertinent, challenging and eclectic figures in the history of 20th century art. In this show, created in collaboration with the Marconi Foundation of Milan, fifty portraits of the artist's wife Juliet Browner, who he photographed between 1941 and 1955, will be presented. The Fifty Faces of Juliet was conceived by Man Ray in the early 1950's as a book in honour of his wife Juliet, but also as a selection of photographic works begun in Los Angeles in 1941. Fifty photographs, original prints using different techniques and styles, some hand-coloured, in various sizes that Man Ray dedicated to Juliet, the definitive muse of his life.
Many of the techniques invented by Man Ray, such as solarisation, over-development, dithering (retinatura) and grains obtained in the shooting or printing phase, were applied in the series with Juliet. Since painting remained his great passion, he thought it was a good idea to touch up his photographs with coloured and treated pastels drawn directly onto the paper. It is for this reason that the series The Fifty Faces of Juliet is unique in its kind; in fact it shows all the abilities of an artist who uses every expressive means at his disposition to reach the sublimations of his own ideas. The portraits of Juliet are for the most part informal; some are focused on her face: faces that are luminous and gathered out of time, superimpositions of photographs that are dreamy and romantic, sensual and daring. Others are refined investigations into the silhouette of the female form: never ordinary, rather classical in the poses and similar to works by painters like Ingrès or Vermeer.
The Fifty Faces of Juliet is the story of a love and of a lifetime. Fifty portraits in which the image of Juliet is each time invented, rewritten, modified, exalted with the mark of the pencil, a graphic effect, superimposition of a piece of cloth, a transparent veil, a mask obscuring the face, her face framed with a large winged hat, revealed in her nudity, transformed into an embroidery.
